Why any company would take a sleek, good-looking, decent-performing laptop and name it the ID47HO2 is a mystery. But Gateway has, and it doesn’t do its subject justice–by all-purpose laptop standards, the ID47HO2 is a definite cut above in appearance. It also has “good enough” performance and squeezes just over 7 hours of running time out of its battery. Still, aesthetics and ergonomics are the real reasons you should consider buying this laptop.

Some of the ID47HO2′s visual appeal stems from its low profile–it’s only 1.13 inches thick, which isn’t bad for a 14-inch budget laptop (the model sells for about $700, as of 9/1/2011). However, the minimalist design ethic scores points as well. The unit has no bling, its lines are neat, its silver and gray is a classy color scheme, and even the touchpad is a clean-looking one-piece rocker type that you press on the front corners to initiate button clicks. Said touchpad is nicely responsive to both finger swipes and clicks.

The keyboard is a chiclet type that’s the same color as the keyboard deck. It has a nice feel, but the flat, unsculpted keys make for a little less secure finger placement when typing. Overall, though, the input ergonomics are first-rate. The 14-inch, 1366 by 768 display yields a sharp picture, is evenly backlit, and delivers rich colors. However, its covering is highly reflective and suffers more than a modest amount of glare under the wrong lighting conditions.

The ID47HO2 has at its heart an Intel Core i5-2410M CPU, 4GB of DDR3 memory, and a 500GB, 5400-rpm hard drive. With these components, it scored a competent 116 on PCWorld’s WorldBench test suite. Gaming frame rates are poor, reaching playable frame rates only at resolutions up to 1024 by 768 at low detail. Budget laptops without discrete graphics chips can’t expect to do better. High-resolution, high-bit-rate video plays smoothly; even the sound coming through the speakers, using Dolby Home Theater, is better than average.

Ports include three USB (two USB 2.0, one USB 3.0), VGA, HDMI, microphone and headphone jacks, and gigabit ethernet, plus a Kensington lock port. Even a DVD-RW drive is on board–the ID47HO2 achieves its low profile with a thin screen bezel. You’ll also find a 1280 by 1024 webcam and b/g/n 2.4GHz wireless.

The ID47HO2 runs 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium, and bundled software includes several of the usual suspects: Microsoft Office 2010 Starter, Norton Online Security and Backup, and a Webcam utility. Nero Multimedia Suite 10 Essentials is also in the mix to support burning discs with the optical drive.

Gateway still has a habit of cluttering up the desktop. In this case, you have links for eBay, Netflix, Gateway games, the Times Reader, Nook, Norton, and a few others. How you feel about this will depend on how useful you find those apps; however, they do tend to spoil the minimalist good looks of the machine itself.

In the end, the ID47HO2, by virtue of its good looks and feel, exceeds the sum of its parts. The numbers, while good, don’t tell the whole story–you must see it and use it to appreciate it.

“My laptop does not recharge even though it is plugged in”.

a.) It is possible that the power adapter has failed or has problems. Check the cord that plugs into the power unit to ensure that it is still intact, and isn’t freyed or shorting.  Also, check for the light on the power adapter (if there is one), to make sure that the light is on. If the light is not on, the power supply is either dead or has a short.

b.)  It is possible that the DC power jack leading to the motherboard of the computer, is loose, broken, or has failed. If the jack is physically loose, damaged or no longer functioning, buying a new jack to be soldered into the mainboard, is mandatory (to prevent premature failure of other components when using faulty parts)

“My laptop can’t hold a charge & shuts off when unplugged”

a.) There is a good chance that the battery has gone kaput. The end!  One important fact to remember, is that laptop batteries gradually lose the ability to hold a charge, and as more time passes the percentage that they can charge decreases. There is hope however; by “cycling” a laptop battery, and remembering to always disconnect the battery  from the computer when using an AC outlet.

b.) To cycle a battery, you will need to charge the battery up to 100% EACH time, before disconnecting it from the power adapter. Then, only use the laptop with the battery, and do not turn off the laptop until the battery has completely drained, and the computer shuts off. This process needs to be repeated numerous times, until the battery’s cell memory is restored. If the memory is not restored after using this process for several weeks, the battery may need replacing.

“After booting, there’s a black screen &  a cursor that blinks”

Many times when we receive a computer to repair that has this problem, the culprit is the hard drive.  There are different factors that will corrupt the data on a hard drive (partition tables can become corrupt, MBRs – Master Boot Records, etc), causing the laptop not to boot after POST  (Power On Self Test).

Hard disks can become corrupted in several different ways, including but not limited to: malware, lack of a surge protector, surges of power or lightning strikes, powering down a computer incorrectly, and many more.

Usually, reformatting a hard disk, and re-installing Windows can “fix” a drive that is not physically damaged! Unfortunately, if a drive has actually failed physically, there will be no other option but to replace the drive, and contact a data recovery company or qualified technician, to recover the lost data (if possible).

Since many hard drive manufacturers create diagnostic utility to troubleshoot laptop hard drive problems, learning the manufacturer of your hard drive and using diagnostic software periodically (to check for problems), will help prevent problems and expensive data loss.

“Laptop doesn’t charge until I wiggle the power cord around”

a.)   See item #1 for information regarding this problem. Usually, you will find the problem being one of two things:  either the power adapter is shorting, or the DC jack has loosened, or is damaged.

b.) Another possibility, is the copper contacts that are inside of the motherboard, are damaged or have become increasingly worn. In the event that this happens, a motherboard replacement will definitely be necessary, since soldering a new DC jack to a damaged motherboard, will result in the exact same problem occurring.

Copper contacts are actually “pathways” that carry power from the power adapter, to the DC jack, and then throughout the motherboard to its components.  Bad contacts will cause power to not be distributed correctly (or not at all), or may cause other problems that might otherwise be difficult to troubleshoot. If your computer has a warranty, call or email the manufacturer; the replacement will be free in most cases.

“I can’t turn my laptop on at all, pressing the power button”

a.) It is quite possible (if you have used your laptop within the last 15 minutes), that it could have overheated. You should allow your PC to cool down for about 30 minutes, then press the power button again to see if it starts up.
b.) When a computer is not powering on for no good reason, it becomes difficult in that case to perform laptop troubleshooting, due to many variables that can cause that problem.  It is possible that you may need to have the motherboard replaced, or it could be as “simple” as replacing the power switch that connects to the motherboard, if it has failed (if the switch can actually be removed/replaced).

” When using my laptop for several minutes, it shuts off”

a.) One possibility, is that the computer is getting too hot. Click here to learn how you can prevent and troubleshoot laptop overheating!

b.) If your PC powers down suddenly without alerting you in any way (no error message, no noise, etc) and the laptop isn’t overheating, there could be an issue with the motherboard itself, or the processor, or other components. If you want to rule out other possibilities other than the mobo, take a look in your BIOS.

The BIOS can be accessed by pressing the necessary keys (or combinations of) to enter your setup menu, immediately after booting. Your BIOS menu has categories, the needed category being “Health” or “PC Health”, or “Temperatures” etc. You will be able to check the temperatures, as well as select the operating temperature for the computer.

In other words, you can choose the maximum temperature the CPU can reach, before shutting off (preventing hardware damaged). Next, you should check to see if your computer is restarting or shutting off due to the “shut off temperature setting” being engaged and/or incorrect. When you find the category or setting to change the max temperature, change the setting appropriately, or disable it all together.

NOTE: If you don’t have a laptop that overheats and is running within its normal operating temperatures, you can change this setting with no problem. If there IS a problem with your laptop overheating, do NOT touch this setting unless you have sufficient experience troubleshooting laptops; seek a professional instead.

“My laptop doesn’t boot up and it keeps beeping”

a.) When memory, otherwise known as RAM, goes bad, or when the slot that the holds the RAM is bad, this problem can occur. Download memtest , install it (FREE), burn it to desk and run it at boot-up to troubleshoot laptop memory problems. Also, in your laptop’s manufacturer manual, you should find information on “beep codes” to give you exact detail on the beeps; what they mean and how to troubleshoot the problem.

For example, four extended beeps COULD indicate that your processor is bad, while two short beeps could point to a RAM stick that is loose and needs to be pushed in tighter!  Always keep your manual handy and contact your technician for further assistance!

b.) The Basic Input Output System (BIOS) may be corrupted, check your manual for beep codes that pertain to a BIOS problem, and how to reset your BIOS (CMOS) when possible.

c.) The laptop battery may be dead. Check your manual for more information on how to change or troubleshoot laptop battery issues.

A lithium Laptop battery, unlike its relative the nickel battery, does not have a charge memory, and so it is not really necessary to fully discharge the lithium battery before a recharge. In fact, fully discharging a lithium battery can actually harm the battery, and prevent it from fully charging in the future. However, if you are still anxious about charging up a battery without completely discharging it, there are a number of ways in which you can create a full discharge of a lithium battery. Use these guidelines to fully and correctly discharge your battery before you recharge.

Step 1 – Let the Laptop do it

The battery inside your laptop does not need a full discharge, as this can cause stress upon the battery. However, if you feel that the battery could benefit from a full discharge, then you should go to the module in your windows program that tells you how full the battery is. In some laptops, the BIOS tool will perform a full discharge/full charge in order to calibrate the gauge of the laptop, and you can bring this process forward if you choose by firstly fully charging the battery, and then leaving it for 2 or more hours. Then in the Control panel, look at Power Options, and ask it to perform an automatic hibernation when the battery reaches 3 percent. Leave the computer on until it goes into hibernation. When this occurs allow it to stay in that state for five hours, and then recharge the battery.

Step 2 – Run it Down

Using an ordinary lithium battery, you can get it to discharge simply by leaving it in a working electronic object until it is empty. Now all items will go into hibernation once they are discharged, but you will probably get warnings telling you that the item is becoming discharged “Low battery” being the most common phrase. To fully discharge a battery, first charge it up to the maximum, and then allow it to expend its energy in whatever electrical equipment you are using. Eventually the battery will run out of power on its own, and the item will shut down.

Step 3 – Use Technology

In some communities, it is possible to take your battery to a science center, and ask them to discharge and recharge your battery for you. There will probably be a charge for this, and you should be aware that they will probably advise you not to do it. Go to the center with your battery fully charged, and make arrangements to collect it when the discharge is complete.

You can also buy special meters which will discharge your battery for you, although these cost a great deal, and it may be cheaper just to buy a new lithium battery.

Step 4 – Don’t Discharge

The best way to damage your lithium battery is by fully discharging it without good reason. The practice arose when people believed that nickel batteries remembered being charged, and didn’t completely charge unless they had been completely discharged previously. This was never true of lithium batteries, and they do not need to be discharged.

Lastly bear in mind that using your portable computer to play a DVD movie uses more power than using a spreadsheet.

If you find that you are often using the computer with the battery at full charge while connected to the main power supply you may want to remove the battery. Keeping the battery fully charged while it’s at a high temperature, which is typical of conditions of a laptop that is always plugged into the main power supply, will dramatically shorten its lifespan. Discharging the battery regularly is also conducive to long battery life. Under optimal conditions laptop batteries will last 24 to 36 months, under less than optimal conditions you may shorten the lifespan down to 12 to 18 months.

To help keep your battery operating at optimal conditions try to fully discharge it once a month. Many people find it helpful to set a calendar reminder so they don’t forget. If you find your battery lasts less than 60 minutes, try fully discharging it several days in a row. Just leave your computer on overnight with no applications running. Be sure to turn off any alarm or lower power warnings that are associated with your power settings. If this fails to work you will need to replace the battery.
